What is the difference between a flow regulator and a control valve?

In the automation sector, knowing the distinctions between regulators and control valves is crucial. Although they function differently and have distinct goals, each are equally significant. Control process designers may prevent serious issues and save money and resources by being aware of how each functions.

Understanding the Difference

Let’s take a closer look at the parts and functions of regulators and control valves to better grasp the distinctions between them.

Control valves modify flow, level, temperature, pressure, and other process variables. They are a component of a standard control loop. A Distributed Control System (DCS), which analyzes the data and determines how the valve should react to maintain a fixed point, receives measurements from a sensor. After that, the DCS instructs the actuator to adjust the valve’s opening or closing.

Regulators, however, function in a distinct way. Unlike control valves, which need external power sources, they do not. Rather, regulators regulate flow by measuring the process fluid’s pressure. The regulator’s diaphragm works with a spring to balance the regulated process fluid pressure. The diaphragm moves in response to any pressure change, modifying the flow area to let more or less fluid pass through.

The main distinction is that regulators deal mostly with pressure. They employ the process of fluid pressure on the diaphragm casing directly. Hence, their design for handling pressures is different from that of control valves.

In addition, regulators react to pressure changes more quickly than control valves do. They can respond to process variations in flow rates more quickly.

Furthermore, regulators don’t release volatile compounds and are simpler to maintain. In contrast to regulators, control valves can withstand greater pressure classes and come in bigger sizes.

Comprehending these distinctions helps in selecting the appropriate element for certain industrial automation requirements.

Choosing the Right Solution for the Right Application

When it comes to installation and maintenance, regulators are often less expensive than control valves. When deciding amongst them, it’s important to take each application’s unique needs into account.

The technical benefits of a regulator or a control valve become apparent in the following circumstances:

Tank Blanketing

This technique keeps a tank’s inert gas pressure constant to avoid air interaction with the outside world. This is where regulators come in handy since they can immediately detect and react to variations in tank pressure. It could be essential to use a valve with a throttling actuator if safety relief valves are unable to be adjusted below the regulator’s design pressure.

Differential Pressure Control

It’s crucial to keep wellhead pressure steady while producing oil and gas. Because control valves can regulate positive differential pressure in pipelines, they are appropriate when electricity is available. Regulators are capable of efficiently maintaining differential pressure in isolated areas without an external power source.

Control of Boiler and Heater

This application often integrates regulators and control valves. The system needs large amounts of gas to operate, and high-capacity valves are usually used for control.

Extreme Service circumstances

Careful attention is required in automation applications that are subject to circumstances such as fast evaporation, cavitation (liquid-vapor production producing wear), or high vibration. Control valves with certain trim designs are better in situations like this when regulators could have trouble handling large pressure changes and minimizing cavitation damage.

Knowing these differences makes it easier to choose the appropriate component for the job depending on the environment and operating requirements.
